Sculptural works in wood by Rodney Band — shaped through 25 years of craft and exploration.

About

I’m Rodney Band. I began working with wood in the early 1990s and have spent more than 25 years developing a sculptural practice rooted in traditional turning. From my studio in Kommetjie, Cape Town, I create hand-turned sculptures exploring balance, texture, and the natural character of hardwoods. My work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and continues to evolve through ongoing exploration of form and material.

Signature Process

Each sculpture begins with a carefully selected log, mounted on the lathe and shaped with precision using a traditional chisel.

Unlike conventional bowl turning—where both the interior and exterior are fully completed on the lathe—I intentionally stop short of finishing the inside. From that point, I move to hand-sculpting using a series of custom tools and a technique that I’ve developed over the past 25 years.

This hybrid approach allows me to achieve a perfectly round exterior while introducing a subtly oval interior — a delicate contrast that gives each piece its sculptural tension and individuality.

The result is a form that moves beyond functional woodturning into a distinctly expressive art piece.

Depending on the scale and complexity, each work takes between three and six weeks to complete.

Commissions

I create custom, one-of-a-kind sculptures from rare woods, roots, and brass — each conceived in close collaboration with collectors, galleries, and private clients.

Every commission begins with a shared vision. We discuss concept, scale, and materials before confirming the investment and starting the creative process.

The result is a work that’s not only exclusive, but also deeply personal — a reflection of the client’s space and story, shaped through my own sculptural language.
